Here is today’s report:

Yankees

Last night, the Yankees achieved consecutive wins for the first time since July 31 as they defeated the Minnesota Twins 9-1. The Bombers crushed three home runs while allowing just one hit to Minnesota. They also walked 11 times with just five strikeouts.

Things were looking bleak early as Carlos Rodón couldn’t get an out in the first inning before he loaded the bases. “We were set up for disaster there,” said Rodón. “But we got through it.” Rodón managed to record two strikeouts and a groundout, allowing the Twins to plate just one run. After allowing a leadoff single to Austin Martin, walking Byron Buxton, and hitting Ryan Jeffers in a 31-pitch first inning, Rodón went on to retire 17 consecutive batters and pitch through seven innings. He walked two hitters and struck out five, efficiently finishing with 96 pitches.

“Not really expecting [to go seven] after 31 pitches in the first,” said Rodón. “But baseball is a funny game.” The Yankees have received much-needed depth from their starting pitching in two games against Minnesota. It has allowed their bullpen to rest, and when a starter pitches at least six innings, it becomes much easier to win ballgames.

“It’s one of those, like, is he gonna get out of the first inning? That’s where your mind is for a minute,” said manager Aaron Boone. “To only give up one, I thought he executed a really good two-strike pitch to [Kody] Clemens. Then he just settled in, and I really thought it looked a lot different, even in the second [inning].”

Ever since making his pinstripes debut in 2023, a year in which he pitched like a free agent bust, Rodón has struggled to rebound from mistakes. If he gives up a home run to one batter, he tends to walk the next. Or worse. Whenever he poorly executes a pitch, his emotions tend to overcome him. This season, he has done a much better job at managing his emotions, and his ability to rebound from a poor first inning yesterday demonstrated that positive trend. The Yankees need Rodón to be a dominant force in the playoffs, so the more confidence he can gain in the regular season, the better prepared he’ll be for October.

Meanwhile, Giancarlo Stanton highlighted the Yankees’ offense, going 4-for-5 with a double and a 447-foot home run, collecting three RBI. His home run marked the 441st blast of his career, surpassing Jason Giambi for 44th place all-time. Since July 6, Stanton has recorded a .341 batting average and a 1.136 OPS. “I feel good,” said Stanton. “Putting together good at-bats, the timing’s there, so just got to take advantage of mistakes.”

Aaron Judge kicked things off for the Yankees’ offense, tying the score in the bottom of the first inning with his 38th home run of the season, which marked his first since July 23. In the bottom of the second inning, Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Ryan McMahon walked, and Anthony Volpe drove them both home with a three-run home run that traveled into the Yankees’ bullpen for a 4-1 lead. Since the All-Star Break, Volpe has hit eight home runs and recorded 16 RBI, which have led to a 131 wRC+ rating and a .565 slugging percentage.

In the fifth inning, Giancarlo Stanton rocketed a hanging slider to the moon, putting the Yankees ahead 5-1. They took a 6-1 lead in the seventh inning when Cody Bellinger walked with the bases loaded, and then Stanton singled to deep right field, scoring Ryan McMahon and Aaron Judge to put the Yankees ahead 8-1.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. led off the bottom of the eighth inning with his first triple of the season, and JC Escarra drove him home with a groundout to second base, giving the Yankees a 9-1 lead. Yerry De los Santos retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth inning, ending the ballgame.

The Yankees will try to sweep Minnesota tonight. It would be their first series sweep since taking three games from the Seattle Mariners between July 8 and 10.
