Big Blue Review – Season 101 Preview
The 2025 New York Giants have plenty of confidence in themselves. There’s a leader in every room. There’s a voice in every corner of the clubhouse. There’s a close-knit culture between the general manager, the head coach, and the players.
This is going to be an exciting 101st season of Giants football. Not because the team is playoff-bound. I’m not that optimistic. But the New York Football Giants have finally given fans something (or someone) to believe in. And he is a young quarterback named Jaxson Dart.
As the Giants finished the preseason with a perfect record, Dart was the star who shone the brightest. He showed an ability to get the ball down the field and work smoothly out of the pocket. He showed versatility, talent, and confidence that former quarterback Daniel Jones never had. He is the future of the New York Giants.
But the biggest question that the Giants must answer this season is just how far into the future it will be when Jaxson Dart becomes their quarterback.
The Giants are fortunate. Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston provide reliable, veteran depth in the quarterback room. Wilson will start for the Giants this weekend against Washington. But when the Commanders found their star quarterback last season in Jayden Daniels, they went all the way to the NFC Championship game. So, perhaps there is a benefit to starting a rookie quarterback sooner rather than later.
Whatever the results are this season, if improvement is evident and the young Giants get to develop, there is plenty of reason to be optimistic for the Giants’ future. But this season will reveal the extent of that optimism. The Giants were miserable last season, winning just three games. It’s going to take more than just a new quarterback for them to become a top NFL team. Almost every other roster spot is the same as it was last season, including the offensive line (except for rookie right tackle Marcus Mbow), and the Giants are far too used to having an unreliable offensive line.
But a good quarterback can defy the weaknesses of his offensive line. Jaxson Dart did that during the preseason. That was his best attribute. The Giants traded back into the first round of the NFL Draft for a reason. So yes, the Giants have the luxury of letting Dart develop, but he might be further along in his development than they initially predicted.
I think the Giants are going to go 8-9 this season. Their defense is elite, with Dexter Lawrence II in the middle and rookie Abdul Carter making a trio with Brian Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux. But the rest of their secondary is questionable at best. Their running back room has competition, with Devin Singletary and Tyrone Tracy Jr. at the front as Cam Skattebo looks to steal the top spot, but aside from Malik Nabers, the Giants’ offense leaves much to be desired. Plus, the Giants have one of the hardest schedules in the NFL.
But what makes this year unique is that a losing record – assuming nothing disastrous occurs – doesn’t necessarily signify a bad season for Big Blue, as long as at the end of the day, the light is still visible at the end of the tunnel.
The right quarterback – not necessarily the most talented one – can transform a team. Is Jaxson Dart that guy for the Giants?
