GAME NIGHT: 2026 ALDS, Game 2 – NYY (0-1) at TB (1-0); TBS, TRUTV, HBO MAX

Losing is impermissible tonight.

The Yankees cannot afford to trail 2-0 in this series, especially with their ace, Cam Schlittler, on the mound.

In last year’s ALDS, the Yankees dropped the first two games to the Toronto Blue Jays and returned to Yankee Stadium on the verge of elimination. They dug deep in Game 3 to extend the series, but they couldn’t complete the comeback.

As frustrating as the Yankees’ 1-0 Game 1 loss was, they didn’t need to win that game to win this series. At minimum, they always needed a split coming out of Tampa Bay. The Yankees can still tie the series tonight, flipping momentum in their favor heading to the Bronx.

But in nine seasons with Aaron Boone as manager, the Yankees have never defeated a higher seed in a traditional postseason series. Just because Freddy Peralta is pitching tonight instead of Drew Rasmussen doesn’t mean the Rays are any easier to beat.

Year after year, the Yankees lose tight postseason games because they make too many mistakes. Whether it’s the comedy of errors that led to five unearned runs in Game 5 of the 2024 World Series, or Austin Wells’s poor baserunning decision in Game 1 of this ALDS, the Yankees often fumble somewhere.

Championship-winning baseball teams thrive when the lights are the brightest. They don’t let a rowdy environment affect their gameplan. They silence the noise, pitch competitively, and defend cleanly. That was the Yankees in the Wild Card Series. They’ll have to rekindle that tonight.

The Yankees were no-hit into the eighth inning on Saturday, but they held the Rays to one run all game. If Gerrit Cole was that effective, Schlittler has hope. Tonight’s game will likely be higher-scoring than Game 1, and the Yankees cannot get shut out again.

However, Peralta has been much better with the Rays than with the Mets. He was traded to Tampa before the deadline, and despite his 4.42 season ERA, he is 5-0 with a 0.79 ERA in his last six starts.

Manager Aaron Boone is going with the same lefty-heavy lineup that Rasmussen dominated in Game 1. But that lineup thrived against Sonny Gray in the Wild Card Series. The Yankees must prove this lineup can still produce on the road, not just at home.

Schlittler doesn’t need much offense to succeed, though. In Game 1 against Boston, the Yankees pushed him to 117 pitches. He struck out 10 batters in 6 1/3 scoreless innings and allowed two hits. The Rays struggle against high velocity, but they had the fewest strikeouts in the league this season.

The Rays know how Schlittler expanded his arsenal against Boston. He surprised the Red Sox with his highest curveball rate of the season. If that trend continues, it will benefit the Rays because they can foul off pitches and put breaking pitches in play. Schlittler won’t surprise them.

However, Schlittler had a 1.16 road ERA this season, the second-lowest in American League history and the lowest since 1913. He thrives off opposing fans, and boos are his best friend. Tonight will be his first career postseason start on the road, so it will be interesting to see how he responds.

“I don’t know why the splits were the way they were,” Schlittler said. “But at the same time, I feel like I pitched really good at home in the back end [of the season]. On the road, I feel like going into an away crowd and silencing that is a great feeling.”

Whatever happens tonight, the Yankees must win. In their history, they have lost Game 1 of the ALDS and ALCS 11 times, and they are 7-4 in those series. They need to come back from behind again in this series, but if they lose tonight, their season will be all but over.
