Knicks Game Night: 2026 NBA Eastern Conference Finals, Game 4 – NYK (3-0) at CLE (0-3); ESPN, ESPN App

Could tonight be the night?

1999 was a very long time ago. Tonight, the Knicks can reach the NBA Finals for the first time since then, but to do so, they have to be the more desperate team.

But how can the Knicks be more desperate when it’s their opponent, the Cleveland Cavaliers, that is facing elimination? This Knicks team is special because of its insatiable desperation and desire to win. These qualities define teams that are championship-bound.

For example, the Yankees seem to reach the playoffs every year, but they always seem to lose. Often, like with Toronto last season, they lose (in part) because another team wanted it more. Unlike the Yankees, the Knicks aren’t taking their opportunity for granted. They are tough, gritty, and desperate.

The Cavs, meanwhile, believe they are up 2-1. Yes, they have actually convinced themselves that they are leading this series 2-1. Their head coach, Kenny Atkinson, told the media yesterday that the Cavs should be up 2-1, analytically.

Cleveland needs to take a page out of Jay Wright’s book. As Josh Hart said after Game 2, quoting his college coach, “At a certain point, [analytics] are a lamppost to a drunk person. You can lean on them, but it won’t get you home.”

If the Cavs are this delusional, then there is no doubt the Knicks will win this series tonight. The Cavs are a talented team, but they have dug a hole too deep to escape. The Knicks, however, are as hot as ever, with 10 straight playoff wins and a record-setting +234 postseason rating.

Cleveland thinks they can take wins away from the Knicks, but it’s about actual results, not expected ones. Cleveland looked gassed down the stretch in Game 3. The Knicks looked anything but. If that continues, the Knicks will earn their second straight sweep this postseason.

Yet, right on cue, Jalen Brunson said, “I don’t want to consider us peaking at this moment. I still think we have a lot of work to do. As a team, I’ve said this all year: We just want to get better every single day. That includes the times that we’re in the playoffs because there’s still time to learn, still time to get better.”

If you’re in Cleveland, this must be the scariest thing Brunson could have said. If the crème de la crème of the Eastern Conference doesn’t think it’s good enough yet, then what does “good enough” look like? Maybe we’ll find out tonight.
