Knicks Game Night: 2026 NBA Eastern Conference Finals, Game 2 – NYK (1-0) vs. CLE (0-1); ESPN, ESPN App

Game 1 was historic for the Knicks as they mounted a dramatic fourth-quarter comeback, led by Jalen Brunson. The Knicks forced Cleveland into one of the biggest choke jobs in NBA history, setting the tone for a series they should dominate.

The Cavaliers could not keep up with the Knicks, especially so soon after a seven-game series. Tonight, the Knicks can put themselves in a prime position heading into Cleveland. They can build off Tuesday’s momentum and knock the Cavs out of New York City.

But for most of the first three quarters of Game 1, it was all Cleveland, all the time. The Knicks had no answer for Donovan Mitchell at the cup or James Harden’s pick-and-roll. From behind the arc, the Knicks shot 4-for-23, showing just how rusty they are after over a week of rest.

Josh Hart is one player seeking a bounce-back game tonight after spending the entire Knicks comeback on the bench. So is Mitchell Robinson, who was ineffective in the third quarter because Cleveland kept fouling him, and he kept missing free throws.

But don’t dismiss Landry Shamet’s impact. He is responsible for the game-tying three-point shot. He hit two critical triples during the Knicks’ comeback and recorded a team-best +25 rating. For the Knicks, as deep as they are, to have a bench player who hasn’t played much this postseason become their sparkplug in a conference finals match… Well, let’s just say Cleveland doesn’t have a player like that.

A championship journey requires talent, commitment, teamwork… You name it. But it also needs a little bit of luck and for a player or two to surprise you. On Tuesday, Shamet surprised the Knicks with championship-caliber electricity.

Also, Cleveland will certainly make adjustments for tonight’s Game 2. The Knicks should be able to handle whatever Cleveland throws their way, but also recognize the importance of avoiding holes like the one they spent three quarters digging on Tuesday.

Based on Cavs head coach Kenny Atkinson’s comments this week, Harden will continue to receive a large defensive load tonight. He was primarily pinned against Brunson during Tuesday’s fourth quarter, but The Beard was no match for Brunson’s atomic clutchness.

For some reason, Atkinson never seemed to call a timeout in opportune moments during the Knicks’ Game 1 comeback. Harden clearly needed to rest, but he was never given that opportunity. Harden is known across the NBA as a choker in big moments. The league recognizes Brunson as the opposite, aka Captain Clutch.

Suffice to say, Brunson should always have the upper hand against Harden. He is the better player, especially when it matters most.

Cleveland’s best defenders are their bigs, Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley. However, when the Knicks find their three-point shooting rhythm, Allen and Mobley become useless pieces. They aren’t strong in transition, which makes Cleveland a weak transition team overall, and they struggle to defend the perimeter.

One thing Allen and Mobley did well in Game 1 was defend Karl-Anthony Towns, often with a double-team. However, when the Knicks found their groove down the stretch, Towns didn’t seem to have any issues contributing. One costly turnover stood out, but his team made up for it defensively.

Furthermore, Tuesday was not the first time this season the Knicks erased a massive deficit against the Cavs. They also did it on Christmas Day, but on Tuesday, Cleveland either didn’t remember or was too tired to care. The Knicks got in their heads. Cleveland is a great team, but they don’t have enough depth to win this series.

So yes, the Knicks have a massive opportunity to stomp on the Cavs before they even get to play in their building. The Knicks can really smush them.

Always Knicks.

New York Forever.
