Knicks Game Night (Series Preview): 2026 NBA Eastern Conference Finals, Game 1 – NYK (3) vs. CLE (4); ESPN, ESPN App

It feels like 20 years since the Knicks swept the Philadelphia 76ers in the second round of these playoffs, but it feels like yesterday when they lost to the Indiana Pacers in last year’s Eastern Conference Finals. Tonight, the Knicks begin the next leg of their playoff journey. They are four wins from the NBA Finals.

The Cleveland Cavaliers stripped the Detroit Pistons down to their true colors in their second-round series, but in the process, the Cavs revealed their own weaknesses. While Cleveland’s series against Detroit lasted seven games, the Knicks have been resting since two Sunday nights ago.

Now, with home-court advantage and a healthy, rested squad, momentum lies with the orange and blue.

The Knicks have won seven straight playoff games. The only risk of their nine-day rest is losing the pace and connectedness that overpowered Atlanta and Philadelphia. Cleveland is a tougher, more formidable opponent, led by Donovan Mitchell, who has had his fair share of Garden takeovers in his career.

James Harden, a terrific player but a postseason choker, joins Mitchell as an offensive leader. Behind them are their two big men, Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen. Because Cleveland has two bigs, the Knicks might have to deploy Karl-Anthony Towns and Mitchell Robinson together.

When the Knicks’ offense struggled in the first round against Atlanta, head coach Mike Brown decided to run the offense through Towns. Since that change, the Knicks haven’t lost a game, but Mobley, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, is as tough as they come. He will challenge Towns, which could open more lanes for smaller players.

The Knicks set three-point shooting records in their final game against Philadelphia. Cleveland is a solid interior defensive team, but many of their top defenders were already slower than the Knicks before their second-round series went seven games. So much of the Knicks’ success comes from exhausting teams in transition, and Cleveland struggles to defend speedy players. They also struggle to score fastbreak points.

In a best-of-seven series, the speed discrepancy could become magnified by the difference in rest between these two teams. Additionally, despite Cleveland’s success at the post and in the paint, the Knicks have plenty of players who can dominate down low. OG Anunoby is fully healthy entering this series, despite tweaking his hamstring in his team’s second game against Philadelphia.

Therefore, the Knicks might not have to play both big men at once. They won’t always be able to anyway, because the Cavs, especially Harden, excel at drawing fouls. Anunoby can play like a big man, and his presence will be key whenever Towns gets trapped by Mobley.

Additionally, Cleveland’s defensive scheme benefits Jalen Brunson. He might get pinned against Mitchell at times, but Mikal Bridges, who was brilliant against Tyrese Maxey, should see the bulk of Mitchell’s minutes. Bridges’s defense will largely determine Brunson’s output; the fewer points Mitchell scores, the more points Brunson will produce.

Next, depth will be critical in this series, especially for a tired Cleveland team. The Knicks’ bench has been integral to their playoff success, especially Robinson, Miles McBride, and Landry Shamet. For Cleveland, Dean Wade is a tough perimeter shooter, and they have plenty of other pieces waiting to contribute.

Another story to watch in this series revolves around Mike Brown. His only NBA Finals appearance as a head coach, in 2007, came with Cleveland. With Golden State in 2022, he won a championship alongside Cleveland’s current head coach, Kenny Atkinson. Both coaches are battle-tested at the game’s biggest stage, which will only work to their advantage.

Overall, this is an excellent conference finals matchup for the Knicks, who are heavily favored to win this series.

Always Knicks. New York Forever.
