Knicks Game Night: 2026 NBA Playoffs Round 1, Game 2 – NYK (1-0) vs. ATL (0-1); NBC, Peacock

Game 1 was fun. Can the Knicks keep the momentum in their favor in Game 2?

The Hawks are more familiar with New York’s game plan now, and they will enter tonight’s game with a better understanding of what makes the Knicks tick. For the Knicks, it’s all about executing their game plan. And then, cue the party on 7th Avenue.

The tandem of Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns was key to the Knicks’ success on Saturday. Even though Brunson barely scored outside the first quarter, and Towns didn’t do much in the opening half, the two took turns operating the Knicks’ offense. Tonight, if they can find a way to succeed together, the Knicks will flourish.

But against an Atlanta team that struggles to defend against the Knicks’ speed, size, and strength, it doesn’t matter how or when Towns and Brunson score, as long as they each contribute offensively.

The thing about the Hawks is that they don’t have many overpowering scorers. Sure, they have Jalen Johnson and Nickeil Alexander-Walker, but the list ends there.

This makes it easier for Mike Brown to design defensive schemes. Because of the discrepancy in power and names, the Knicks must prioritize their game plan over anything the Hawks counter with.

That said, the Hawks have a much better sense of the feels of playoff basketball at the Garden. They are a young team, so naturally, they needed more time to adjust to the postseason than the experienced, battle-tested Knicks. There are two ways to respond to the Garden’s atmosphere: Succumb to the pressure or meet the moment.

Perhaps tonight, the Hawks will meet the moment. A seven-game series can turn on a dime when the visiting team takes momentum home. The Knicks must be careful to avoid this trap. They must use their skills to harness the Garden crowd’s energy.

There isn’t anything wrong with the postgame celebrations that ensued on 7th Avenue after Saturday’s Game 1 win, but they are premature. They are a sign of what could come if the Knicks win it all, but a poor look for New York if their team falls short tonight.

The end is far from visible right now. It is all about tonight. Can the Knicks take a commanding 2-0 series lead down south, or will they let the pesky Hawks into the fight?
