Here is today’s report and weekend roundup:

Yankees

Runs can be scored in many ways. Last night, the Yankees beat the Kansas City Royals 1-0 to sweep the series, and their only run came off Pablo Reyes’s legs. “Phew, we’ll take it,” said Aaron Boone after the Yankees won 1-0. They now have their 10th single-season 6-0 record against any opponent in franchise history.

Reyes should never have reached home plate in time. He stumbled while rounding third base, getting caught bouncing left and right down the third base line. “Keep going, keep going, keep going,” cried third-base coach Luis Rojas. And  Reyes kept going.

Reyes was at second base, and Ben Rice was at first when Paul Goldschmidt lined a 98-mph fastball off first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino’s glove. Kansas City’s reliever Lucas Erceg had just returned from injury a day earlier, and Pasquantino’s throw to Erceg at first base was not in time.

There was Pablo Reyes, who led off the eighth inning with a single. Erceg’s throw to Freddy Fermin at the plate was wide and low, and Fermin couldn’t glove the ball, allowing Reyes to score. Reyes sprawled out on his back, shocked and relieved that he made it home in time. In time for high-fives, water, and Gatorade.

“There’s a little bit of panic, because it’s later in the game, it’s the eighth inning, and you definitely want to score there,” said Reyes through an interpreter. “When you lose your balance, now you’re thinking, ‘Okay, I got to get to a base and be safe and give us another chance.’ With the opportunity, somebody is going to come up and hopefully bring me in.”

Reyes was, quite literally, fighting for his life last night, not just because he was out of breath after scoring that run, but because he was fighting for a roster spot with Giancarlo Stanton’s return imminent tonight. “I’m trying to enjoy every opportunity that Booney gives me,” said Reyes, who got to start because of Aaron Judge’s rest day and Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s injury. “I just try to keep my head up and come here every day and work hard and get ready for the opportunity.”

“That’s such a hard position to be in, to not play for an extended period of time,” said Paul Goldschmidt, whose eighth-inning deflected line drive made way for Reyes’s run. “Just a great job by [Reyes] tonight. He’s played great defense when we need him. He got that whole inning started with that leadoff hit, and then scoring the run there.”

Or, as Will Warren put it, “Pablo juked [Erceg] out.” Warren pitched a scoreless 5 2/3 innings, surrendering four hits and one walk. “I think we look at it as like we dominated the game today.”

After a rain delay, Will Warren secured an additional two outs before Tim Hill relieved him. Hill worked with Mark Leiter Jr. to complete the next 1 1/3 innings, and Jonathan Loáisiga secured three key groundouts in the eighth inning. In the bottom of the ninth, Devin Williams worked a 1-2-3 inning for his ninth save of the season and his second in as many nights.

The Yankees are ready for a Father’s Day weekend rematch against the gritty Boston Red Sox, who took two of three at the Stadium last weekend. The Yankees will start each of their southpaws against Boston’s lineup.

Tonight, at 7:10, LHP Ryan Yarbrough (3-1, 4.17 ERA) will square off against LHP Garrett Crochet (6-4, 2.35 ERA) after struggling against the Red Sox last week in this same pitching matchup (YES).

Tomorrow, at 7:15 PM, LHP Carlos Rodón (8-4, 2.87 ERA) will face off against RHP Hunter Dobbins (3-1, 4.20 ERA) (FOX). Dobbins admitted he never fact-checked his comments from last week about how the Yankees treated his father, so this will be an interesting matchup.

Finally, on Sunday at 1:35 PM, LHP Max Fried (9-1, 1.84 ERA) will toe the slab against RHP Brayan Bello (2-1, 3.96 ERA) (YES).
