Daily Report – 3/15/25
Here is today’s report and weekend roundup:
Yankees
The Yankees announced that Carlos Rodón will be their Opening Day starter and Max Fried will potentially start game 2.
The Yankees walked it off against Philadelphia on Friday night, 5-6. They will visit the Rays tomorrow at 1:05 PM (Gotham Sports). On Sunday, they will host Pittsburgh at 1:05 PM (YES) and visit the Rays in a Spring Breakout game at 1:05 PM (MLBN).
Rangers
Braden Schneider won it in overtime for the Rangers on Thursday night in Minnesota. The Rangers bested the Wild 3-2 thanks to his sharp backhand shot. The Rangers and Blue Jackets now have 70 points, so this win sets up a Saturday night showdown in Columbus (MSG). The Rangers will also host the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday night (MSG).
Despite Schneider’s clutch game-winner, my favorite moment of this game was Jonny Brodzinski’s second period goal. The Rangers’ fourth line, centered by Jonny Brodzinski, has been finding plenty open ice in recent games, thanks to Matt Rempe’s defense at the red line. Jonny Brodzinski has a sharp wrist shot that can fool goaltenders. It slipped past Filip Gustavsson on Thursday night.
The last time Brodzinski scored a goal at Xcel Energy Center, it was during his senior year of high school. The Ham Lake, Minnesota native – who is now 31 years old – was playing in a state championship game. He was drafted 148th overall by the Los Angeles Kings in 2013, and he played six games for them in 2016-17, 35 in 2017-18, and 13 in 2018-19. The Rangers signed him as a free agent in 2020, and he earned his first multi-year contract at age 30 last February. Fun fact: Brodzinski made his NHL debut against the Rangers.
During his early years with the Rangers, Brodzinski served as captain of the Hartford Wolf Pack, where he helped mentor players like Will Cuylle, Brennan Othmann, and Brett Berard. On Wednesday night, he hosted some fellow former Hartfordites at his house, and he and his wife fed and entertained them.
Brodzinski is now a father, and over 40 family members and friends watched him play on Thursday. He rewarded them with his career-high seventh goal of the season – right where it all began. A full circle moment for the hardworking center.
