Avery aims to pursue a career in sports broadcasting, a passion sparked by his uncle, a lifelong, diehard Yankees and Rangers fan. Avery grew up attending baseball and hockey games with his uncle, whose disability challenged his ability to see the action on the playing surface. Therefore, Avery would describe the live action to him in detail, like a broadcaster. Avery’s devout love for sports emerged later in his childhood, as he grew closer to his uncle, but he had always enjoyed broadcasting. When Avery realized he could turn sports broadcasting into a career, he fell in love with the concept and began working hard every day to get closer to entering the field.

Avery is a rising junior at Washington University in St. Louis (WashU), and he currently serves as sports director at the school’s radio station, KWUR 90.3 FM. The position involves being the school’s lead play-by-play voice for sports such as baseball, softball, basketball, soccer, football, and hockey, as well as managing a team of broadcasters. Avery also started the station’s first-ever podcast, which features exclusive interviews with WashU athletes and coaches.

Also, Avery has been writing a New York sports email newsletter for several years, and it has evolved into an extensive online platform in which he writes articles about the Yankees, Rangers, Knicks, and Giants throughout the year. Due to the incorporation of social media into this newsletter, its following currently exceeds 550 individuals, and it continues to grow every day.
